The 2023 New York Film Festival takes place September 29-October 15, with Us Premiers and festival worldwide prizewinners. Todd Haynes’ film “May December,” will open the 2023 New York Film Festival next 23rd September before getting its limited theatrical release on Nov. 17. The story is well-known. Gracie Atherton-Yoo, portrayed by Julianne Moore, a former tabloid celebrity who ended up in prison on charges of minor rape for engaging in a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old boy, Joe, who worked at the pet store she managed. The relationship between Gracie and Joe, which began when the boy was 13, was a national scandal, but the couple has endured over time and become parents.
Michael Mann’s Ferrari has been selected as the closing-night movie in October 13th. The biopic is about Italian race car manufacturer and entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari, with Adam Driver in the starring role.
This year’s Main Slate showcases films produced in 18 different countries, featuring new titles from renowned auteurs, exceptional work from returning NYFF directors as well as those making their NYFF debut, and celebrated films from festivals worldwide including Cannes prizewinners. Some of the festival’s highlights include Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” with Jacob Elordi as Elvis and Cailee Spaeny as his (just barely) teenage bride; the Leonard Bernstein biography directed by Bradley Cooper, “Maestro,” in which he stars alongside Carey Mulligan.
The festival also features the recent Venice Film Festival winner, Yorgos Lanthimos’ steampunk fantasy “Poor Things,” with Emma Stone, who is generating Oscar buzz for her role as Bella, a young woman brought back to life by Dr. Baxter and hungry for intimacy.
Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall, which was awarded the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes, will be also playing at New York Film Festival. A portrait of a complicated woman is conveyed intriguingly through the medium of a courtroom drama.
Evil Does Not Exist,” the new drama film by “Drive My Car” director Hamaguchi Ryusuke, has also been picked up for its U.S. premiere as a Main Slate selection of the Festival. More international festival’s highlights ranged from Agnieszka Holland’s agonizing “Green Border,” about the migrant crisis, to onathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest.
Italy will be represented with Alice Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera,” starring Isabella Rossellini and Josh O’Connor as a former British convict involved in a dangerous illegal trade of ancient artifacts, entering the clandestine and treacherous world of tomb raiders. Also, “Rapito” by Marco Bellocchio tells the story of the young Edgardo Mortara, kidnapped on the orders of Pope Pius IX, and won the Best Film award at the 2023 Nastri d’Argento.
The 61st New York Film Festival, presented by Film at Lincoln Center, will take place from September 29th to October 15th at the Lincoln Center and other venues in New York City.
